Marabu Charcoal – A Unique, Sustainable Product

Marabu charcoal is derived from the Marabu plant, an invasive species that thrives aggressively in Cuba’s landscape. Originally imported from Africa in the 19th century, the plant found its way to Cuba, where it flourished after the country fell into an economic crisis following the collapse of the Soviet Union. With agriculture neglected, the Marabu plant spread freely across the land, growing into bushes or trees as tall as ten meters.

Marabu charcoal stands out for its exceptional combustibility, which is the key to its long burn time and high carbonization. This unique quality results from the careful, artisanal process of charcoal production. The branches of the Marabu plant are stacked in a traditional “Meiler” structure, sorted by size, with the largest branches placed in the centre and the smaller ones on the outside. This method, which takes anywhere from 14 to 24 hours, ensures that the final product retains the dense, heavy properties of the wood.

Thanks to its high caloric value, Marabu charcoal offers a long burn time, even at high temperatures, with minimal smoke. Its complete carbonization means it burns cleanly and efficiently, making it the perfect choice for your grilling needs.

Marabu Charcoal is extracted from the Marabu plant. This is a plant that grows wildly and very aggressively into bushes or trees as tall as ten meters. Officially, the plant is not from Cuba, or from the Caribbean, but it was imported from Africa in the nineteenth century. Cuba used to be financially supported by the Soviet Union, as it was also a communist state at the time. However, when the Soviet Union fell, of course that financial support also stopped and Cuba was on its own. Therefore, Cuba fell into a severe economic crisis. The land and agriculture were neglected and so the invasive Marabu plant was given free rein to grow. It is a heavy wood and this property is also retained during the 14 to 24 hour burning process.
